Makeup should never be essential for you to feel beautiful. It’s important for you to feel comfortable in your own skin. That being said, applying makeup is fun for me as it should be. I do a full face of makeup because it makes me happy but I do give my skin breathing days where I don’t wear any makeup at all. I’m just as comfortable with bare face as I am with a full face of makeup on.
Before I actually start my makeup application I always cleanse and moisturize my skin. Washing your face in the morning can not only wake you up but it gets rid of the bacteria that has accumulated while sleeping. Moisturizing after cleansing is just as important, because cleansing takes out all of the moisture in your skin. It’s usually best to do this about thirty minutes prior to applying your makeup.
Now I know all of these products can look intimidating, but I am a very high maintenance girl and using this many makes me feel fab so no judging ok
Primer– I use two because it’s what I’ve found has worked best for my skin. I start with Benefit’s The Porefessional it is a pro balm to minimize the appearance of pores. I only apply this where I feel my pores are the largest (usually around my nose/cheeks.) Then I’ll apply Maybelline’s Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser. This primer is ehh, I use it because it gives my foundation a good base, but does it reeaaally minimize pores … not for me at least, but that’s ok because it does make my foundation application smoother. I’ll apply this with the same brush I apply my foundation with.
Pre-concealer(?)– I like to apply my Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Brightener under my eyes before foundation. I’ll blend this out with my RealTechniques sponge.
Foundation– I’ve been using Urban Decay’s NAKED skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid foundation. Do I love this? Not really to be completely honest. But it’s what I have available at the moment. I’m kinda bleh about this because you have to wait for this dry before applying any other product. Which is annoying because I have very oily skin so I just wanna powder
powder powder and that causes the dreaded cake face. BUT I will say once it does kinda soak into your skin it does give off a great finish. It’s medium to light coverage & I still need to apply concealer to any imperfections, which is ok because it is a foundation NOT a concealer so it’s not meant to cover every little blemish up. I find the best way to apply this is with the Urban Decay Optical Blurring brush, I do love this brush and I feel it really helps with the coverage of the foundation!
Concealer– Once I’ve let my foundation dry for a few minutes I like to brighten even more under my eyes. For that I use Maybelline’s Instant Age Rewind in the shade Pale (try using under eye concealers one or two shades LIGHTER than your skin tone to brighten). I apply this in triangular motions and blend out with my sponge. The sponge is great because it can help take away excess product if you have a heavy hand with concealer (me!) It’s important to blend out in dabbing motions starting from inner to outer corner of your eye. Once I have that applied I liked to cover up any blemishes or imperfections with Stila’s Stay All-day concealer. I make sure this shade matches my skin tone so I’m not highlighting my blemishes instead! I blend this out gently and with my ring finger.
Setting Powders– For under my eyes and anywhere I may have highlighted using concealer, I like to use bareMinerals Mineral Veil. I tap this under my eyes very gently so I don’t disturb my concealer with an E.L.F blush brush (perfect size for under eyes). Now this is a must because even if you have dry skin your concealer WILL crease. Then I’ll use my NYX HD Studio photogenic translucent setting powder for the rest of my face. I do love this powder. It adds no other color to my face so the coverage of my foundation doesn’t change.
Phew okay that was a lot for just the base, you still with me??
Eyes– I always prime my eyes with MAC’s Painterly Paint Pot so my eye shadow lasts all day and wont crease. This is must for me because like my oily skin I also have oily eyelids. I won’t go into depth about which eye shadows I use because I like to do a different look almost everyday. But I have been LOVING the 90’s grunge vibes so my eye shadow has been matte, dark and grungy. For those looks I will always use Two Faced Chocolate bar palette (it smells JUST like chocolate) & both of The Lorac Pro palette’s. I highly recommend any of these if you’re a beginner and want to start using eye shadows, they have a great mix of matte and shimmer finishes. (I do own the infamous NAKED palettes but personally I prefer the pro palettes.) For any eye look I’m doing I will always use the MAC 217 blending brush, I could do a whole look using just that one brush, It’s perfect if you don’t own it you NEED it. Honestly its the best for blending!
Eyeliners– So as I said before I’ve been like SO into the grunge looks and for that I’m always wearing smudgy black or grey liners! Rimmel Scandaleyes waterproof black kohl and Covergirl Perfect Point liners are my two current favs. They both last all day and are easy to smudge! I always use my bareMinerals dual ended brush, using mainly the pencil side to blur my liner.
Mascara– For almost a year now I’ve been using Jordana Best lash Extreme Volumizing Mascara. This is my tried and true, & it’s only like $2.99 which is amazing for the quality of the product! The only downside is that you can only find Jordana products at Walgreen’s.
Bronzer, Blush, & Highlighter– I always always always use Benefit’s Hoola bronzer. It’s matte and the perfect shade for contouring/warming up the skin. I’ll apply this with the brush it came with because it gives me the perfect line for contouring. Always try to make sure you have balance on your face. So if I’m highlighting like crazy under my eyes it needs to be balanced out with a healthy glow or contour. So contour to get those amazing cheek bones, that thin nose, a strong jaw line and that smaller forehead. (Don’t forget to blend this out!! you never want just straight lines on your face!) Milani’s Baked Blush in Dolce Pink is my go to, lately tho I’ve been enjoying the full matte face so I’ve just been using bronzer. But I do love this blush it gives me that perfect healthy glow! For highlighter Stila’s all over shimmer duo in kitten is my long time fav and when I am going for that glow, I like to apply this with a large blending brush meant for the eyes on the tops of my cheek bones, cupids bow and right above the arch of my brow. Using an eye brush for this is totally unnecessary and your ring finger would work just fine (I’m high maintenance tho ‘member.)
Brows– This is my favorite step!! I have been loving the trend for brows lately and I’m thinking about doing a whole separate blog post all about brows just because they deserve that much attention. For now I’ll share what products I use to achieve the full thick brow trend. First I’ll start with Anastasia Brow Wiz in soft brown, I love shaping my brows with this. Then I’ll use Anastasia Brow Powder duo in Medium Brown to fill in with an angle brush, and lastly I’ll finish/set my brows with Benefit’s GimmieBrow in blonde. Now i know that all these products are higher end and not as available as drug store but I am telling you it is worth every penny. Anastasia KNOW’s brow products. Drugstore brow products tend to have a more red undertone and that does not work with my hair and skin tone. Brows are a huge thing these days so it’s important to A) wear them however makes you happy and B) don’t be afraid to invest a little extra into something as important as brows!
Lipstick– Last but certainly not least is lips! Now if you follow me on any social media then you’ll see I do love a dark lip. But mostly for everyday use I do prefer a “low maintenance” lip. Again with the 90’s trend I’ve been loving a heavily lined and a brown nude lip. For that perfect shade I use MAC Velvet Teddy. It’s a matte finish and super long wearing. (If you want to know my fav dark lips let me know!)
Now I am in no way a Makeup Expert but I do LOVE makeup so much. It’s a hobby for me, and I enjoy spending my money on better quality products. But that doesn’t mean that you have to go spend all this money. It’s just what works best for my skin, and what always works best for me may not work for you. EVERY skin is different so keep that in mind! Also there are no rules to makeup so you do whatever makes you happy, but these are little tips and tricks that I’ve found helpful when applying makeup!
